Tulika Books - Great kid's books from India

Snoring ShanmugamSometime prior to our trip to India last winter, we discovered serendipitously, an interesting book publisher based in India and cranking out books on wonderful Indian folktales with gorgeous local art. We were piqued and ordered a bunch of them to be shipped to our folks in India so we could bring them back to the US. The publishers, called Tulika Books, far exceeded our expectations in the quality of their books. We expected something good but this was fantastic.Take a look at some of their toddler books and you will be blown away by the simple text and gorgeous art. Character names are very Indian and distributed across different regionalities so as to make everyone happy. For example, the 3+ picture book series has a bunch of animals that make their appearance across all the books but with each one focused on one of them- Hutoxi the horse, Snoring Shanmugam the lion, Mallipoosundari the piglet, Bahadur the little elephant and so on. The tales are whimsical and tickle young kids pink. For adults, there is a sense of connection to home and the tales weaved to us by our grandparents and parents when we were little. We now have a decent collection of their books and have come to love them all. The little guy is enamored with all the characters in the books and their awesome expressions. For parents, the content is just right for the age without scaring the young kid in his/her sleep. After reading the books over and over again, I can strongly recommend these as a great read for 2-5 year olds. For the discerning parent looking to get kids hooked on their mother tongue, there are bilingual books available. For older kids there are much more sophisticated books that go deeper into traditional art and tales from India- we cant wait to try them with our little guy when he gets older. If you want to know more, visit their website or check them out on Facebook. By the way, you can order books online with credit cards (helped us a lot) and have them deliver to India or US (we did the India option since it was cheaper).PS: I have absolutely no financial or vested interest in recommending these books but for the fact that we love it (parents and kid) and would like more people to encourage such wonderful independent publishers from India.
